Paco Pomet at Lucha De Gigantes, Madrid

Paco Pomet was recently invited to take part in the group exhibition ‘Homenaje A Frida’ (Tribute to Frida) - the latest instalment of the innovative art project Lucha de Gigantes.

Lucha de Gigantes brings together the talent of prestigious international artists and challenges them to reinterpret the work of the greats of the past. By inviting contemporary artists to “explore from their own language the work of those who have engraved their name in gold in the History of Art”, the project aims to pay homage whilst attracting and engaging a new audience of future collectors.

The latest chapter focused on the life and art of Frida Kahlo, and was held in Casa de Mexico, Madrid, alongside the foundation’s ‘Frida Kahlo: Wings to Fly’ exhibition, which is open until November and features 31 works by the celebrated surrealist.

20 artists were invited to produce works for the event, and whilst differing in disciplines and contemporary styles, all share a passion for the surreal, the oneiric, the transgressive or the disturbing, in line with the production of the Mexican painter.

Pomet’s creation for the exhibition, ‘El ardor’ (The burning), is an oil painting that features Kahlo and husband Diego Rivera in front of a fireplace. There is, of course, a surreal twist, with Rivera’s head replaced with a burning fire, perhaps in reference to the couple’s tumultuous relationship. Tellingly, and in complete contrast to Kahlo’s own works such as ‘Frieda and Diego Rivera’, the great female painter is colossal in size compared to her partner, and it is him that delicately places his hand on her.

‘Homenaje a Frida’ was open 16th - 18th June 2022.
