Paco Pomet: Celestial

Paco Pomet's oeuvre revolves around the alignment of old and new, fusing traditional and contemporary elements to construct a unique visual language that reflects the cyclical nature of human experience. By interweaving different eras and cultural references, the Granada-based artist disrupts the notion of linear progress and suggests a more nuanced and complex understanding of time and history.

Between 2017 and 2022, the sun and the moon were prominent in much of Pomet’s output, serving as symbolic representations of the perpetual patterns and rhythms that shape our daily lives. By blending these celestial motifs into terrestrial contexts Pomet brings the cosmos into proximity, prompting viewers to look within themselves, rather than gaze upwards, in order to explore their connection with the universe and their place within it. This intensely personal, yet widely resonating perspective evokes questions around themes that are deeply embedded in our collective consciousness: the ebb and flow of time, the interconnectedness of life and death, and the continuity between beginnings and endings.

It is perhaps therefore fitting that the first work in the Celestial collection should be Little Dusk (2017), a painting that so clearly conveys a sense of impending finality. Similarly, whilst this is likely unintentional, the body of work as a whole has its own natural connection to the interplay between the sun and the moon.  There are 29 paintings in this series, mirroring the number of days in a lunar cycle, while 8 of these compositions feature the moon, matching the number of phases it undergoes during this period.  Thus, an additional layer of enigma is added, further underlining the core themes expressed through the paintings themselves.

Pomet’s focus on the luminaries, and the ways in which they affect how we feel, behave and see the world around us, has served as a catalyst for the emergence of radiance, facets of light and shadow which have permeated much of his subsequent output.  This progression in style and technique is clearly evident in Our Dusk (2022), the latest painting in this body of work.  Produced in his new studio - the first change to his working environment in over 2 decades - it signals a new dawn in the artist’s career, ushering in the next chapter in his oeuvre.

And it is perfectly in sync with the subject matter – and quintessentially Paco Pomet – that this brings the Celestial series back to where it all began – at the end.
